Maharashtra Girls to play Junior National Football Championship

The Maharashtra Junior team which is participating in the AIFF Junior National Football Championship for Girls arrived in Cuttack today.

The tournament is being held from 20th October to 5th December 2013. Maharashtra has been placed in Cluster II along with West Bengal, Chandigarh & Mizoram. They play their opening game on 21st November against Mizoram.

The training camp for the girls was held at Cooperage from 1st November 2013. The trials saw a good turnout with over 80 girls from the different districts of Maharashtra attending the selections.

AFC ‘C’ License coaches Marcellus John Alackal & Ajay Shetty have been appointed as Coach and Assistant Coach of the team. Both have been involved with girls’ football for the past few years. The other coaches who helped with the team’s preparation were Kundan Chandra, Sameer Shaikh, Dilip Patenkar & Durva Vahia. The team includes girls from Mumbai, Thane, Pune & Satara.

“We have been clubbed in a tough group with three strong teams. The girls have prepared well for the tournament and we know that they will do their best.” said Western India Football Association Secretary, Souter Vaz on the team’s chances in the tournament.
